A windy Tuesday with several beautiful encounters with Humpback whales
The morning started pretty windy but sunny, so we didn’t mind travelling out to north of Hjalteryi where we had a Humpback whale that we were busy feeding in the area. It was moving nicely and slowly, and gave us several beautiful close encounters with it. It had a very distinct fluke thanks to the orange tint, caused by microscopic algae called diatoms that attach to the skin of whales, giving them this unique colouring.
In the afternoon, the wind had picked up even more, and the sun disappeared, but we had a Humpback whale right next to the warm waterfall, close to Akureyri. After spending some time with it, again we headed out to north of Hjalteyri where the Humpback whale from this morning had disappeared but been replaced by another Humpback whale, one with an almost completely white fluke. It must still have been a lot of food around because this Humpback was also moving slowly in the area, giving us several close-up encounters.
