Code of Conduct for Responsible Whale Watching

Whale watching is about observing wild animals in their natural environment - and that means giving them the space and freedom to behave naturally. In Akureyri, we follow the Code of Conduct for Responsible Whale Watching developed by IceWhale (The Icelandic Whale Watching Association), to help ensure that encounters with whales and dolphins are respectful and minimise disturbance.

GIVING WHALES SPACE

When we encounter whales or dolphins, our approach is slow and predictable. We avoid sudden changes in direction or speed and never intentionally cut across an animal’s path or surround it with boats. We always aim to leave the animals a clear route to move away if they choose to. If another boat is already watching a whale, we avoid overcrowding the area and work together with other operators to give the animals space.

LETTING THE WHALES DECIDE

One of the most important principles of responsible whale watching is that the encounter should be on the animals’ terms. We do not chase whales or dolphins to get closer views. Sometimes a curious whale may choose to approach the boat. When this happens, we can enjoy the encounter while remaining as still and unobtrusive as possible. We never touch, feed or swim with the whales or dolphins.

RESPONSIBLE WHALE WATCHING IN PRACTICE

Our crew is familiar with the Code of Conduct and use their experience to assess the behaviour of the animals and conditions at sea throughout every tour. Responsible whale watching may sometimes mean slowing down, keeping our distance, waiting our turn or moving on - even when we know there are whales nearby. For us, a successful tour is about creating memorable encounters while respecting the animals we have come to see.

OUR SHARED RESPONSIBILITY

We also believe our guests are an important part of responsible whale watching. During the tour, our guides explain why we behave differently around wildlife and what we are looking for when assessing the animals’ behaviour. By following these guidelines together, we can enjoy the incredible wildlife of Eyjafjörður while helping to ensure that whales and dolphins can continue to use these waters undisturbed.
